Progress changes everything. It leads to the development in every single thing in this versatile world. Altering the humankind, it causes breakthroughs in science, evolves the demographic state of society and other important spheres of human’s life. This all can’t pass unnoticeably for the human race. Progress changes the society’s morality, cultural values, political views and the way of thinking. But in our changeable world, there are some things that always persist. The human’s nature always remains the same. People only adapt to the new order of things, but they don’t change their ”Ego” .There is also a thing that never changes: all the controversial issues relating to our global society. It may seem that they do change, but it is only an illusion: the only thing that varies in them is their setting.
It may seem to You, my reader, that the subject of my essay doesn’t have anything in common with the start of it and I’m beginning my essay a way too far from the main theme. But trust me, these points that I’ve mentioned above really helped me out with finding the answer to the main topic “What would Charles Dickens write, if he lived nowadays?”
So would Charles Dickens write about the same issues if he were our contemporary? He would, for sure. Because, as writer, he was interested in such problems that have always been, are and will always be in our world, such problems, as social inequality and injustice. The lexicon and the plot of his works would definitely change: in “Oliver Twist”, the teenage members of Fagin’s gang would steal IPhones and GPS navigators from the respectable gentlemen and tourists instead of handkerchiefs and wallets, or instead of another portion of gruel the protagonist would ask for some chips or hamburgers. But the good old Dickens, as we love him, would remain the same realistic writer. The change in his writing style would only lead to drawing more attention of modern audience, turning their gazes from TV or computers’ screens to his creations, making the readers devour his books.
But would Charles Dickens be published? Or would he, along with his masterpieces, just drown in the never-ending publishing maelstrom, being unable to conquer with “Harry Potter” or “Twilight series”? Or maybe, due to lack of money, start writing scripts for films or even soap operas? As for me, I admit the fact that he could possibly write some scenarios for films and maybe soap operas to earn his daily bread. But I have to note, that in that case, the soap operas would not be soap operas at all! They would possibly turn into something unique and meaningful. As for being published, I am doubtless about the answer to this question. My answer is positive and I would also mention that many publishing companies would fight to the death for the right to publish one of his works.
In conclusion, let’s review the points (or theses, if you like), that we’ve made during our imaginary brainstorming session. Dickens would write about the same social evils and would be published. But what’s the reason for it? The main cause is that a talented person is not affected by the epoch he is living in. No matter who you are, what family you are born into, or when you are born, if you come to this world with a talent you will never get lost or forgotten. Charles John Huffam Dickens was a talented novelist .And though he was born exactly 200 years ago, and passed away about 132 years ago, he is still alive. The famous author lives through the legacy, which he handed down to all of us. No matter what your gender, age, race, religious beliefs and views on different aspects of our everyday life are, a small part of that great man lives in all of us, and will always exist, causing to reread his books from cover to cover.
